My high school's old dress code was much worse. Guys have to wear pants (I live in effing Florida, do you know how hot it is?), button-up shirts (no patch-pockets), ties that match (you would get a demerit if it didn't match), shirts had to be tucked in at all times, hair could not touch the collar or restrict your field of vision in front or be "disorderly" as judged by dean. Also, you could not have any facial hair, dress shoes of a solid colour were required, a belt was required, and black socks were required. That is all I can really remember. Girls had it even worse, and often had their skirts measured. With a rule. One time, a girl was caught without underwear, and I'm pretty sure she was suspended for a week. I thought it was pretty hot.
I think the only thing I ever got demerits for repeatedly was for my hair. I was avoiding the dean so much, he would actually ambush me from around corners and outside my classes. I think I was his amusement for the day.
When I lived in Connecticut which was up till kindergarten I went to a private school (Holy Cross), I know I know, my family is religious (well at least some of my family is) but I'm not. We had uniforms then, but after that it was just public school and free to wear what I wanted (except that one semester I was in ROTC before I got my wavered expulsion).
No facial hair allowed? Would have had half my year done for then. http://www.burnside.n-tyneside.sch.uk/information/school-uniform/ If you read the about us, they don't tell you how the initial year 7's / 8's were at a completely different site two miles away because the new buildings weren't even made yet, and they then got burnt down forcing us to work in porta-cabins in two years at the main site ;v
